Due to the Russian shelling, Ukraine's energy system currently lacks 19% of capacity to cover the forecast consumption and is expected to persist, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has said at a government meeting.

According to him, Russian missiles hit some energy infrastructure facilities on 5 December. Power engineers expect to eliminate the consequences of the shelling in the coming days.

"In general, in recent months, 35% of key power mains have been damaged by massive Russian attacks, 70% of them were hit two or more times. Yesterday, the enemy launched seven missiles at once at one of the substations in Odesa Region. Therefore, power outage schedules continue in the country," Shmyhal said.

He stressed that despite the massive attacks, Ukrainian air defence units shot down more than 60 Russian missiles. As a result, the Ukrainian energy system remained intact and controlled by Ukrenergo dispatchers.

Odesa and Kyiv regions suffered the most from the Russian attack on 5 December. It will take several days to recover the grid to the pre-attack level.
