A special programme of Ukrainian vintage horror animation, organised with the support of the Ukrainian Institute, took place at the Kaboom Animation Festival in Amsterdam, as reported on Facebook.
The Kaboom Animation Festival is one of the Netherlands’ leading animation events, focusing on innovative, daring and diverse works — from experimental films to large-scale international projects. The festival brings together artists, directors and audiences, creating a space for the discovery of new approaches and perspectives in contemporary animation.
The programme featured rare and little-known Ukrainian animated films spanning the period from the Soviet era, through the 1970s–1990s, to the early years of independence. The selection was curated by Danylo Pinko.
The programme examined how the horror genre reflected political transformations, operated under censorship, and fostered dialogue between generations within the Ukrainian animation community. Ranging from folklore-inspired narratives to body horror and black humour, the selection included the films Mars-XX, Terrible Revenge, Passionate Faces, Scary Stories, The Secret Refuge of Love and Yuliya’s Birthday .
