US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan discussed the issue of Ukraine with the spokesman for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Ibrahim Kalin, states the website of the White House.

They discussed the ongoing support for Ukraine in the context of the russian aggression and the corresponding efforts in maintaining access of the Ukrainian agricultural export to the world markets.

Sullivan has said he supports Turkey's direct talks with Sweden and Finland to resolve the issue of countries' applications for NATO membership, which the United States strongly supports.

"He also reaffirmed the importance of refraining from escalating in Syria to maintain existing ceasefire lines and avoid further destabilization," the statement said.

On May 18, representatives of the families of Mariupol defenders visited the Turkish capital Ankara. They asked to help save the lives of their relatives and all servicemen who were at the Azovstal metallurgical plant. Turkey has acted as a mediator in negotiations on the evacuation of the severely wounded from Azovstal.

In addition, Turkey has blocked the process of considering Sweden's and Finland's application to join the NATO.
