Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on 6 September that its forces had struck an American unmanned military vessel that was allegedly attempting to enter the “protected zone of the Strait of Hormuz”.
This was reported by Iran’s state broadcaster.
At the same time, the Iranian side did not specify exactly where the vessel was hit or what damage it sustained.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) has also not commented on the IRGC’s statement.
The IRGC’s statement came a day after US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth warned Tehran that the United States would “destroy” Iranian oil tankers if Iran attacked American ships.
On 5 September, CENTCOM reported strikes on three oil tankers which, according to the US military, belonged to the IRGC. The United States said that beforehand the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had launched ballistic missiles towards US Navy ships.
According to CENTCOM, as a result of the American strike one of the Iranian tankers sank in the Gulf of Oman.
“Thanks to the skill and professionalism of US service members, the M/T Kylo vessel sank today in the Gulf of Oman,” CENTCOM said.
