A search operation began in Poland’s Lublin Voivodeship on the morning of 18 October amid suspicion that an unidentified object may have breached the country’s airspace overnight.
This was reported by the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces.
According to the military, a ground search-and-rescue team from the Territorial Defence Forces was dispatched south of Lublin. The police and military police have also been involved in the operation.
The command stressed that there is currently no confirmation that Poland’s airspace was violated. The inspection is intended to determine the nature of the radar signal that was detected and to clarify the circumstances surrounding reports from local residents. It has not been ruled out that the signal may have been linked to meteorological phenomena or anomalies.
As RMF24 reports, the search is being carried out near the Zemborzyce Reservoir on the outskirts of Lublin. Reports from members of the public about an unidentified object flying in the sky came in at around 2:00.
At about 6:30, Poland’s Government Security Centre sent residents of the Lublin region an alert about a Russian attack on Ukraine. It was cancelled 20 minutes later, with officials noting that there was no threat to Poland.
That same morning, air-raid alerts urging people to take shelter were also issued in Lithuania and Latvia. NATO fighter jets were scrambled, and Kaunas Airport in Lithuania was temporarily closed. The alert was later lifted.
