Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will travel to Tehran on 19 October, his first visit since the start of the US-Israeli operation against Iran. The aim is to hold talks intended to “prevent a return to full-scale war” in the region, CBS News reports.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said it is ready to discuss a seven-day ceasefire and reopening the Strait of Hormuz if the United States ends its naval blockade and sanctions against Iran. Last month, Washington rejected this Tehran proposal.

The UK’s Royal Navy reported 10 attacks on commercial vessels carried out last week in and near the Strait of Hormuz. According to its data, October has been the worst month for attacks in the strait since the beginning of March.

  • In an attempt to bring down prices for diesel and other petroleum products ahead of the midterm elections, Washington has moved closer to Russia.
  • Against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, Iran and Russia have stepped up military co-operation. Tehran supplied the Russians with Shahed-type drones and licences to produce them. The occupiers have been striking with these unmanned aircraft since autumn 2022.
