Ukraine has signed a €60m financing agreement with the European Investment Bank to modernise border crossing points on its western border. The funding is provided under the “Western Border Infrastructure of Ukraine” project.
This was reported by the Minister for Recovery, Infrastructure and Transport, Mykola Kalashnyk.
The agreement was signed during a meeting with European Investment Bank Vice-President Karl Nehammer.
The project is intended to increase the capacity of Ukraine’s border with EU countries and Moldova, reduce waiting times for passengers and freight transport, and cut businesses’ logistics costs.
As part of the project, plans include modernising border crossing points, improving access roads, terminals, waiting areas, service infrastructure and shelters. It also предусматривает upgrading equipment and software for customs control.
During the meeting, the parties also discussed other areas of co-operation. Priorities include financing Community Resilience Plans, protecting critical infrastructure facilities, supporting Ukrzaliznytsia, restoring roads, and modernising water supply and wastewater systems.
Ukraine is also working to attract additional grant funding and technical assistance to implement these projects.
- Moldova is discussing with Ukraine the possibility of relocating Ukrainian border crossing points onto Moldovan territory. This is expected to reduce risks for border guards and customs officers due to Russian attacks on Ukraine’s border areas.
