In Washington, a suspicious item was found near the entrance to the consular section of the Ukrainian Embassy on 23 October.

This was reported by Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to Ukrinform.

As a result, staff and visitors at the diplomatic mission were temporarily evacuated.

Tykhyi noted that US police classified the find as suspicious. For people’s safety, the area around the consulate was immediately cordoned off.

US law enforcement officers and bomb disposal experts arrived at the scene and are now carrying out all necessary checks.

  • Ukrainian embassies in various countries have previously faced similar troubling incidents. In November 2022, a letter was delivered to the Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid (Spain). A member of staff began opening it and it exploded in his hands. As a result, the man was injured.
  • In December 2022, a number of Ukrainian embassies received blood-stained packages. Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that blood-smeared parcels were delivered to the embassies in Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Croatia and Italy, as well as to the consulates general in Naples and Kraków and the consulate in Brno. They contained animal eyes.
