Italian authorities are preparing for new protests and possible unrest in a number of cities, including Milan, Rome and Turin.

To that end, the country is deploying hundreds of troops and bringing in a significant number of additional security forces, European Pravda reports, citing dpa.

Security measures were tightened after large-scale violent clashes that took place last weekend. In response, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government adopted a decree to send an additional 500 troops to Milan, noting that it would act decisively.

Law enforcement has taken control of railway stations in the Lombardy region to prevent a mass influx of young people into Milan. In the city centre, any demonstrations have been completely banned, and security will be provided by mixed patrols of police and troops, who are also preparing for preventive detentions.

Protests in Italy

  • Protests against the rising cost of living, fuel prices and tax pressure are continuing in various Italian cities. They have turned into mass unrest.
  • Milan suffered the greatest damage, where hundreds of young people dressed in black forced the police to retreat in the face of improvised explosive devices, barriers and bottles.
  • The Italian government decided to send half a thousand troops to Milan and promised a "decisive response by the state" after the protests escalated into clashes with police, arson and looting.
  • The country is also investigating whether external forces, including Russia, were involved in the violent protests.
