Scoop of the day: WIldfires in eastern Ukraine reported tamed

Wildfires

The wildfires which have been raging in Luhansk Region for several days have been localized, the State Emergencies Service has said. There are three beds of smoldering but there is no longer a threat that the fire may spread.

Coronavirus

Ukraine has registered 810 new coronavirus cases by the morning of 9 July. The total number of cases has reached 51,224, including 24,784 recoveries and 1,327 deaths, the Health Ministry added.

Donbas

On 9 July, pro-Russian militants breached a ceasefire which was agreed at the meeting of the trilateral contact group yesterday. They fired with an 82-mm mortar and an anti-tank missile system near Novotoshkivske.

On 8 July, one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and three wounded amid 14 separatist attacks.

Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Reznikov, who is also the first deputy head of the Ukrainian delegation to the trilateral contact group, has urged the West to support efforts to modify the Minsk agreements on Donbas because they "no longer reflect the realities on the ground in eastern Ukraine".

Russia

Russian special services continue to use their capacities in Ukraine to carry out information operations against it, the Foreign Intelligence Service has said. In particular, Russia is trying to use Ukraine to exert external influence on political developments in the world, it added.

Propresidential party

Exclusive: The propresidential party Servant of the People has replaced the head of its Kirovohrad regional office, Oleksandr Danutsa, with Mykyta Poturayev over the former's interview with LB.ua, he told the website. He added that the change took place in breach of the party's policy which would have required holding a regional conference.

Elections

The committee on state building, local governance, regional and urban development has advised parliament to schedule local elections for Sunday, 25 October.

Legal

Kyiv's Podilskyy district court has obliged the Bihus.Info journalist project to refute their reports in which they claimed that the son of a former deputy secretary of the National Security and Defence Council, Oleh Hladkivskyy, was involved in embezzlement in the defence sector.

Economy

In June, inflation slowed down to 0.2%. The annual inflation sped up to 2.4%, according to the State Statistics Service.

Crime

The National Anticorruption Bureau of Ukraine has detained a man who attempted to bribe the head of the State Property Fund, Dmytro Sennychenko, with 800,000 dollars for an appointment of particular persons as heads of two state-owned enterprises and an extension of a contract between one of these enterprises and a commercial company.

The Security Service of Ukraine has exposed a large-scale scheme under which Russian mineral fertilizers were illegally delivered to Ukraine at the lowest customs duty, leaving the Ukrainian budget without 2.2bn hryvnyas.

Football

Karpaty Lviv FC has been officially expelled from the Ukrainian Premier League after it failed to show up for two games in a row.

Dynamo Kyiv FC has won the Cup of Ukraine for the 12th time.
