Scoop of the day: SBU nabs separatist handler

Bust

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has detained a certain citizen K. in Kyiv who, in 2014-2020, was one of the handlers of the so-called Donetsk people's republic on behalf of the Russian Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU). He was involved in the creation of the so-called DPR intelligence directorate and other terrorist units. This directorate was directly involved in the downing of the Flight MH17 in July 2014. He was in charge of an agent network which was to carry out a series of terrorist and sabotage acts in Ukraine.

Coronavirus

Ukraine has registered 564 new coronavirus cases by the morning of 7 July, which is almost as many as a day earlier. Thus, the total number of cases has reached 49,607, including 1,283 fatal ones, the Health Ministry has said.

Donbas

Four Ukrainian servicemen were wounded as a result of seven attacks by the Russian occupying forces in Donbas today. They are in satisfactory condition and are being treated.

On 6 May, the Ukrainian Joint Forces returned fire, having killed eight occupiers and wounding one.

Crimea

Ukrainian ombudsman Lyudmyla Denisova has condemned the detention of six Crimean Tatars by the Russia-controlled authorities in Crimea and called on the international community to join efforts to defend and secure a release of the detainees.

Language law

The Constitutional Court has started checking the language law for compliance with the constitution on the request of 51 MPs who claim that it infringes on the rights of ethnic minority languages, such as Russian.

CIS

Ukraine is leaving the CIS agreement on the creation of the council of the member states' financial intelligence chiefs, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's decree.

Economy

Ukraine has increased its international reserves by over 3bn dollars up to 28.5bn dollars for the first time since autumn 2012, according to the National Bank of Ukraine.

Environment

Five people got killed and nine were admitted to hospital as a result of massive forest fires raging in Novoaydar District of Luhansk Region. The National Guard and the Armed Forces joined the fire-fighting efforts.

Crime

A serviceman in Odesa Region was caught selling grenades, body armour, smoke bombs and TNT which he stole from a military unit.

Unidentified individuals blew up a cash-in-transit van of the Ukrainian postal company Ukrposhta near the village of Tyshky in Poltava Region. They stole around 2.7m hryvnyas and a guard's gun. Two people in the van were lightly injured.
