Ukrainian composer Alla Zahaikevych has been awarded the honorary title of Maestra Honoris Causa by the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, the Ukrainian Association of Electroacoustic Music reports.

The honour, they note, marks the institution’s 200th anniversary and is intended to recognise Zahaikevych’s many years of creative, teaching and organisational work, her contribution to musical art, her dedication to her craft, and her ability to inspire composers and audiences.

On 9 October, a concert dedicated to Zahaikevych’s music was held at the Amare Concert Hall (an international centre for music and dance) in The Hague. The event served as the public conclusion of the project week Music for Peace and Justice (“Music for Peace and Justice”).

The programme featured original works for instruments and electronics performed by students from the conservatoire’s classical music department. These included “Song of Odysseus” for French horn and electronics, “Mithe IV: K.S.” for violin with electronic recording and real-time sound transformation, as well as “To keep silence…” for piano and electronics.
