Prosecutors proved in court the guilt of a 23-year-old man who exploited the trust of the mother of a missing serviceman and stole nearly 470,000 hryvnias in state payments. The court sentenced him to 10 years in prison.

This was reported by the Prosecutor General’s Office.

In June last year, the woman asked the son of an acquaintance to help her withdraw cash from an ATM. To do so, she provided him with the necessary personal details.

Using the information he obtained, the man installed a banking app on his own phone and linked it to the victim’s account. Over the next five months, without her knowledge, he transferred money to other accounts and spent it on his own needs.

The woman discovered the theft during another purchase, after which she contacted the bank.

In court, the defendant fully admitted his guilt, and on 6 October 2026 he was convicted of large-scale theft and unauthorised interference with the operation of information systems (Part 4 of Article 185, Part 5 of Article 361 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

In addition to imprisonment, the man was banned for one year from holding positions or engaging in activities related to information systems and electronic communications networks.

Until the verdict enters into legal force, the convicted man will remain in custody.
