Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has dismissed as unfounded allegations that Canadian politicians interfered in the US congressional midterm elections, due to take place on 3 November.
He told journalists in Istanbul, The Washington Post reports.
Carney stressed that Canadian diplomats avoid even the appearance of interfering in other countries’ electoral processes. He also expressed disappointment over the US ambassador’s remarks.

At the same time, the prime minister noted that US officials themselves have made statements relating to Canada’s domestic politics. President Donald Trump threatened to make the country the 51st US state, while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described the province of Alberta as a “natural partner” of the United States.
Carney said that Canada is ready to resume trade negotiations if Washington is prepared to conduct them in good faith. However, Ottawa will not agree to a disadvantageous deal simply for the sake of a quick outcome.
“Canada will never become the 51st state. We are going our own way,” the prime minister stressed.
