Speaker says media not to be barred from parliament sidelines

He urged journalists to jointly discuss new rules of accreditation.

Ukrainian parliament speaker Andriy Parubiy has promised journalists that they will not be barred from the sidelines, according to an LB.ua correspondent.“There will be no restricted access for Ukrainian journalists in the Ukrainian parliament. This is my clear position. And it never changes,” he said.

He said that he had received a letter signed by 40 journalists who demanded that he do not sign the procedures committee’s recommendations to deny journalists access to the sidelines.

Parubiy urged journalists to set up a public council for consultations with the parliament apparatus to work out new rules of accreditation.

The Ukrainian parliament has rather simple and “liberal” rules of media accreditation in place.

The number of accredited journalists reaches 4,000 people.
