The United States is seeking to train the Ukrainian military to rely more on manoeuvres rather than artillery fire in combat, Politico reports.
The reason for this is the growing concern about the ability of Western countries to replenish the Ukrainian Armed Forces' ammunition stocks.
The article states that the war in Ukraine has been marked by the massive use of artillery by both sides.
In Brussels, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said that Washington and other countries are concerned about the ammunition shortage.
“We are working with the Ukrainian soldiers in various places throughout Europe to emphasize additional training on manoeuvre so that as they place more emphasis on manoeuvre, and shaping the battlefield with fires and then manoeuvring, there’s a good chance that they’ll require less artillery munitions,” the Pentagon chief said.
France and Australia have agreed to cooperate to produce more 155mm ammunition.
Last year, the United States also tried to increase its own production of 155-mm shells. The US Army has promised to triple its shell production from pre-war 14,000 to 90,000 per month by 2025.
