According to a poll conducted from 20 September to 3 October, 63% of Ukrainians are ready to endure the war for as long as necessary. For the first time, sociologists have recorded a decline in this figure.
This is stated in a study conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS).
From the beginning of the invasion to February 2024, the situation remained virtually unchanged: consistently, about 71-73% said they were ready to endure the war for as long as it took (and another 2-3% said 1 year). During the same period, 18-21% said they had a shorter safety margin (a few months to six months).
‘Between February and October 2024, for the first time, we recorded a decrease in the share of those who are ready to endure as long as necessary. At the same time, the majority of Ukrainians - 63% - still say that they are ready to endure the war for as long as it takes. At the same time, the number of those who say 1 year has increased from 3% to 6%, meaning that 69% of Ukrainians are talking about a relatively long period,’ the report says.
However, the number of those who could not answer the question has increased from 4% to 12%, which apparently reflects the growing uncertainty of the future in the eyes of Ukrainians.
In the South, the number of those who say they are ready to endure the war for as long as necessary has decreased from 68% to 50%. At the same time, there has been no significant increase in those who say they are prepared to endure it for a short period: 24% in February and 26% now. Instead, the number of those who have not decided on their opinion has increased from 4% to 17%.
In the east, namely in Donetsk and Kharkiv Regions, in February 2024, 70% were ready to endure as long as necessary. Now the number of such people has significantly decreased to 38%. Instead, the share of those who say they are ready to endure a short period has increased from 23% to 36%, and the number of those who are undecided has increased from 5% to 16%.
At the same time, among those who believe that Russia has unlimited resources, 52% are ready to endure as long as necessary (and 59% are ready to endure for a relatively long period).
The majority of both men and women, young Ukrainians, middle-aged Ukrainians, and older Ukrainians demonstrate a high readiness to endure as long as necessary. However, men are the most willing to endure the war as long as necessary - 67% of them. Among women, this figure is 60%. Other indicators are almost equal.
