Russia is spreading another fake story about “atrocities by the Ukrainian Armed Forces” in Russia’s Kursk Region, the Centre for Countering Disinformation reported.
Russian outlets are widely circulating a video featuring a statement allegedly made by a Ukrainian prisoner of war claiming that Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers “abused children, filmed it, and then burned the bodies.”
“As usual, the Russians provide no evidence of these ‘atrocities,’ basing all accusations solely on the ‘confessions’ of a person being held in enemy captivity,” the CCD said.
The Centre notes that testimony from prisoners of war is not an objective or reliable source of information. People under the Russian total control give comments under pressure and under the threat of torture.
The very fact of using prisoners of war to film propaganda materials is a direct violation of international humanitarian law.
“Such fake accusations are part of a large-scale Russian disinformation campaign aimed at discrediting Ukraine’s Defence Forces, justifying the continuation of the war, and diverting attention from war crimes committed by the Russian army against Ukrainians,” the CCD added.
