President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will decide on Ukraine’s new ambassador to the United States after all candidates are vetted by the Security Service of Ukraine and the National Anti-Corruption Bureau. He said this during an audio briefing with journalists.

Commenting on the existence of candidates for Ukraine’s ambassador to the US, he noted that the appointment is especially important now, ahead of the imminent unblocking of the trilateral negotiating process. American air defence systems are also needed.

“It is very important not to make a mistake,” he said.

It is important for the President to receive a detailed briefing on the candidates from the SBU and NABU. After that, he will make a decision.

Context

In August this year, Ukraine’s ambassador to the US, Olha Stefanishyna, announced the end of her diplomatic mission. She reported this on the eve of being served with a notice of suspicion for illicit enrichment and false asset declarations. NABU and the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office informed her of the suspicion shortly after her dismissal. Olha Stefanishyna received her first notice of suspicion several years ago, before her appointment as ambassador.

The President said he already has a candidate, but will not name them yet.
