German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressed that he considers Ukraine’s strikes on targets that limit the Russian government’s ability to wage war to be right, justified and understandable.

The head of the German government noted that he sees no desire on Russia’s part to end the war, Sky News reports.

That is why Merz backed Ukrainian attacks on facilities that disrupt communications and energy supplies in Russia.

According to Merz, such actions are virtually the only way for Ukraine to make Russia understand Kyiv’s readiness to defend itself and bring Moscow to the negotiating table.

The German chancellor also said he intends to discuss the issue personally with Donald Trump in December.

  • Earlier, the US president urged Ukraine to stop strikes on Russian oil refineries, ostensibly to ease pressure on diesel prices.
  • In addition, the United States and Russia agreed on an initial supply of more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel for the American and global markets. Trump explained the decision as an effort to bring down energy prices in the United States.
