Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has said that US President Donald Trump’s agreement with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on diesel fuel exports is significant for Budapest.
He said this in an interview with the Hungarian outlet “444” after the EU summit.
“I believe the American president makes whatever agreements he considers necessary. On the other hand, this agreement still has a certain significance from Hungary’s point of view,” Magyar said.
According to him, Hungary has an exemption from sanctions on supplies of Russian oil and gas until November. The United States extends this exemption every year.
“If the American president has concluded an agreement on diesel exports, then it would be illogical not to grant Hungary this benefit for at least another year,” the Hungarian Prime Minister noted.
At the same time, Magyar acknowledged that from Ukraine’s perspective the arrangement between Washington and Moscow is undesirable.
He added that at the EU summit on 16 October the agreement was discussed in the context of rising energy prices. However, in Magyar’s view, the American president’s decision on this arrangement is not among the issues the European Union summit should be deciding.
- On the eve of this, Péter Magyar met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Brussels. Key topics of the talks included the rights of the Hungarian minority in Zakarpattia, restoring political and economic trust between the countries, and ending Russian aggression.
