A Vatican representative, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, visited Ukrainian prisoners of war in Russia. This is the first such visit by a foreign representative since the start of the full-scale invasion.
This information was announced by Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets.
According to him, Ukrainian defenders also confirmed that representatives of Russia’s Ombudsman have begun visiting them regularly.
Lubinets noted that the day before, he again held a meeting with Russia’s Human Rights Commissioner, Yana Lantratova, regarding the return of Ukrainians.
- Earlier, the Ombudsman reported that only the International Committee of the Red Cross has a mandate to visit prisoners, speak with them, document their detention conditions, and ensure their rights, including the right to communicate with their families.
