Scoop of the day: Medvedchuk put under house arrest

Medvedchuk's case

Kyiv's Pecherskyy district court has put pro-Russian MP Volodymyr Medvedchuk under house arrest at least until 9 July as a measure of pre-trial restraint. Putin's friend Medvedchuk is suspected of high treason and attempts to plunder Ukraine's natural deposits in Crimea. Prosecutors' request for pre-trial detention has been rejected.

According to Medvedchuk, the other suspect in the case and his fellow party member, Taras Kozak, is undergoing treatment in Belarus.

Donbas

A Ukrainian serviceman was killed by a sniper in Donbas today, the East Operational-Tactical Command has reported.

Ukrainian presidential chief of staff Andriy Yermak has met the ambassadors of G7 in Kyiv today and asked for their assistance in committing Russia to deliver on its commitments undertaken at the Paris summit of the Normandy Four leaders and in arranging an urgent meeting of the Normandy Four to push forward the stalled talks on Donbas.

Naftogaz

Yermak has told the G7 ambassadors that a 12-month contract was signed with Yuriy Vitrenko who will chair the board of the national oil and gas company Naftogaz of Ukraine (Naftohaz Ukrayiny). The supervisory board will be offered to carry on in their roles against guarantees of constructive dialogue with Vitrenko.

Security

The Security Service of Ukraine has registered a rise in cyber attacks on Ukraine from Russia amid the latter's military build-up along the two countries' shared border, the SBU's cyber security department chief Illya Vityuk has said at the "Ukraine 30" Forum.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has unveiled the Cyber Centre UA30 tasked with preventing various cyber attacks on Ukrainian facilities.

France

The governments of Ukraine and France have signed four framework agreements worth over 1.3bn euros as part of French Economy and Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire's visit to Kyiv. In particular, the Ukrainian railway company Ukrzaliznytsya will receive 130 Alstom locomotives worth around 900m euros.

Kyiv mayor Vitaliy Klitschko has described massive searches at key city-owned enterprises as "intimidation of the capital authorities, unprecedented even at the heat of Yanukovych's rule". He accused the central authorities of putting pressure on the Kyiv authorities and "strangling local self-government".

Coronavirus

All regions of Ukraine are now in the yellow zone, according to the Health Ministry.

Ukraine reported 6,813 new Covid-19 cases this morning. There were 346 coronavirus-related deaths.
