On 5 April units of the National Guard of Ukraine arrived at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and took the facility under their protection.

The National Guard will provide protection and defense of nuclear facilities, as well as physical protection of nuclear materials.
The state special enterprise noted that one of the important tasks to be performed at the ChNPP is to check the safety of the site, its transport infrastructure, as well as the radiation condition of the premises and facilities of the station where the occupiers were.
The ChNPP administration has emphasized that it is very important to rotate the shift personnel. These are 46 volunteer workers who went to the ChNPP site during staff rotation on 20 March, as well as 13 workers who continue to be in the workplace for about 1,000 hours since the occupation of the plant.
On 24 February russian troops entered the Chornobyl zone from Belarus. After a fierce battle, the Ukrainian military lost control of the nuclear power plant.
Ukrainian intelligence later reported that russia was preparing provocations at the ChNPP, which could affect not only Ukraine but also Europe.
During their stay, the russian occupiers again damaged the power line to the ChNPP and the city of Slavutych. Forest fires have been noticed in the Chornobyl zone, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported increased concentrations of cesium.
On 31 March, the occupiers left the ChNPP, signing the “Act of Acceptance and Transfer of Protection” of the station, and also captured Ukrainian National Guardsmen.
