Ukraine does not have the infrastructure for F-16 fighter jets. But this infrastructure will begin to be built as soon as there are written guarantees of receiving these aircraft, President . Volodymyr Zelenskyy has told a press conference
There was an important closed meeting about receiving the fighter jets during Zelensky's visit to Moldova, he said. He added that a number of leaders had provided verbal guarantees of the transfer of the fighter jets.
"They have confirmed that they will give us F-16s. For this, we need a joint agreement with the United States of America. I cannot talk about this in detail," he said.
Partners know how many fighter jets Ukraine needs. Some allies have already let Ukraine know the number.
"It is impressive," Zelenskyy added.
He suggested that first there should be an agreement on paper - in the Ramstein format or otherwise - and then the preparation of the infrastructure will begin. It will not be a quick process, but there is a clear understanding of what will be done.
According to the presidential office, the European part of the "coalition of fighters" already includes eight countries: the UK, the Netherlands, Poland, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Portugal and France. The allies are planning to set up a special fund for the transfer of F-16s.
