Today, 14 December, the two-day EU summit has begun, with Ukraine's accession to the European Union as its key issue. Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the European Council via videoconference.
Zelenskyy asked the heads of state and government not to “fall back into indecision today" and not to "betray" faith in Europe.
"It is very important that Europe does not fall back into indecision today. Nobody wants Europe to be seen as untrustworthy. Or as unable to make decisions it prepared itself," Zelenskyy said, according to The Guardian.
According to the President, Ukraine has fulfilled its obligations.
"Last year, Ukraine received clear recommendations on how to move forward. We passed the key laws. You all - and I emphasise: all - know well that we fulfilled every obligation," he said.
And he made a plea for Europe to honour its promises, stressing that Moscow would benefit from a negative response from Brussels regarding Ukraine's accession to the EU.
"Putin will surely use this against you personally, and against all of Europe. Don’t give him this first - and only - victory of the year. Europe must win, agreements must be honoured, and words must matter," Zelenskyy said.
