On 31 January, the International Court of Justice ruled in the case of Ukraine against Russia on charges of financing of terrorism, Yevropeyska Pravda has reported.
Ukraine filed a lawsuit alleging Russia's violation of two international conventions: on the suppression of the financing of terrorism and on the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination. The accusations concerned episodes from 2015-2017.
According to the court's decision, Russia is guilty of violating Article 9 of the Terrorist Financing Convention. The International Court of Justice believes that the aggressor country has failed to fulfil its obligations to investigate the cases of terrorist financing, which Ukraine has repeatedly drawn attention to.
The court found most of the charges to be unfounded. It is noted that the main problem in this case was the conservative approach of the International Court of Justice to the interpretation of the Terrorist Financing Convention.
The court ruled that terrorist financing only applies to the transfer of funds and does not apply to the provision of military equipment and weapons to militants. Therefore, if Russia supplied terrorists with Buk missile systems, this is not terrorism.
Also, the court did not order Russia to pay compensation, as demanded by Kyiv, Sky News reports.
