The Polish government plans to extend the legal stay of Ukrainian refugees in the country until 30 June this year. The law will then be reviewed and amended.

This is stated in the draft amendments to the law on assistance to Ukrainian citizens due to a full-scale war, Ukrinform reports.

Due to the extension of the stay of Ukrainian refugees in the EU until 4 March 2025, and in accordance with the Polish law of 12 March 2022 on assistance to Ukrainian citizens, it is planned to "extend the validity of certain legal decisions provided for by this law until 30 June 2024".

After the deadline, the Polish government will work on "substantial amendments and extension of the law" in accordance with the above-mentioned EU Council decision.

"This work will be started immediately after extensive consultations with local governments, state institutions, non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders," the draft says.

The draft amendments to the law provide for

· extending the period of legal stay of war refugees in Poland until 30 June;

· the permissibility of further use of buildings where war refugees from Ukraine temporarily reside in groups;

· the legality of Ukrainians' permits to stay in Poland.

The temporary protection mechanism launched by an executive decision of the EU Council in March 2022, initially for one year, was extended for another year - until 4 March 2025.
