Germany announces new aid package: 120,000 rounds of ammunition, air defence missiles, howitzers

Germany has announced a new aid package worth €1.1 billion. This was announced by Chancellor Olaf Scholz at a briefing with the President of Ukraine.

"This includes 36 armoured howitzers and wheeled howitzers from the stockpile, 120,000 rounds of ammunition, two Skynex systems and missiles for IRIS-T," he said.

For this year, the country has earmarked €1.7 billion to support Ukraine, and another €6 billion for the following years. In total, Germany has allocated or pledged €28 billion in military aid.

Germany is the second largest supporter of Ukrainians. Scholz said that today his country has taken another step by signing a security guarantee agreement.

"It establishes that Germany will continue to support Ukraine as it defends itself against Russian aggression," the chancellor explained.

Germany will support Ukraine in building up its modern armed forces to prevent any future Russian aggression.

"If Russia thinks about it in the future, we have detailed agreements - diplomatic, economic and also military - on how we will help Ukraine. The agreement is the embodiment of what the G7 countries agreed to last year in Vilnius. A pledge to which more than 20 countries have already joined," Scholz said.

The Chancellor added that Germany is the second country to sign the security pledge. The first was the United Kingdom. After Germany, France is to sign the agreement.

Germany will also help in the civilian sphere: reconstruction and demining.

In exchange for the guarantees, Ukraine is obliged to continue reforms that will lead to its accession to the European Union.
