Russia has struck Chernihiv. At least 14 people have been killed and more than 60 wounded, according to the National Police as of 13:46. The number of victims is constantly growing as the search operation continues.
There are 61 known injured people, three of whom are children. Six people are reported missing.
The Russians struck with Iskander missiles, the head of the RMA, Vyacheslav Chaus, told Suspilne journalists. Among those killed in the Russian shelling was a 25-year-old police lieutenant who sustained shrapnel wounds while at home on a sick leave.
According to preliminary data, 16 houses were damaged, mostly with windows blown out. The police are going around and inspecting the apartments. Gas and electricity supply is limited in the city.
"Three missile strikes on the city centre. An eight-storey building was destroyed, four multi-storey buildings, a hospital, a higher education institution, and dozens of cars were damaged," said Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Kuleba.
The missile strike was reported on the morning of 17 April by the head of the RMA, Vyacheslav Chaus, on Telegram. The enemy fired at least three missiles at social and civilian infrastructure.
"The enemy hit social infrastructure facilities. Unfortunately, there are casualties," said acting mayor Oleksandr Lomako.
During the telethon, he said that there was a direct hit on an eight-storey building. This is a densely populated area of the city. Buildings and cars were damaged.
According to Chaus, the Russians struck almost the centre of the city.
"The enemy launched three missile strikes almost in the centre of the city. There are dead civilians and many wounded. Rescuers and medics are working now. All necessary assistance is being provided," he said.
According to the Ministry of Health, a hospital is among the damaged facilities.
"The building of the medical facility was damaged, there are no casualties in the hospital," the statement said.
Chernihiv Polytechnic told Suspilne that the strike damaged its central building.
"The blast wave blew out all the windows and doors. There were no injuries or casualties. People took shelter in time. Our foreign partners are now aware of the damage and are preparing to help us," the rector said.
The Chernihiv regional blood centre called for blood donations.
On Wednesday morning, the Russian army launched missiles. The Air Force reported missiles within the Chernihiv Region heading for Kyiv.
