The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has ‘categorically rejected’ Russia's groundless accusations against Ukraine of alleged involvement in the ‘aggravation’ of the security situation in Syria, the Ukrainian foreign ministry said in a statement.

The Foreign Ministry noted that Ukraine, unlike Russia, ‘unconditionally adheres to international law, the principles of inviolability of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other countries’. The ministry also stressed that it is Moscow, along with Tehran, that ‘bear the main responsibility for the steady deterioration of the security situation in Syria’.

‘And for the Assad regime's crimes against its own people and its unwillingness to ensure a fair dialogue within the country have threatened the survival of Syria as a single independent state,’ the statement said.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that the escalation in Syria has a ‘Ukrainian trace’. According to her, Moscow ‘strongly supports’ the actions of the Syrian leadership to counter the offensive of the rebels, who, according to her, are receiving support from outside the country, in particular from Ukraine.

Zakharova did not provide any evidence to support her claims.
