Presidents Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine and Maia Sandu of Moldova have condemned Russia’s suspension of gas supplies to Transnistria, calling it a deliberate act that has triggered a humanitarian crisis. The two leaders issued a joint statement affirming their countries’ readiness to meet the energy needs of the region’s residents.

“We strongly condemned the deliberate cessation of gas supplies by the Russian Federation to the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova, which caused a humanitarian crisis. The parties reaffirmed their commitment and ability to provide urgent and concrete solutions to meet the energy needs of the inhabitants of the Transnistrian region, prevent further escalation of the crisis and restore basic services,” the statement read.

The presidents also stressed their determination to strengthen energy security, diversify energy sources, and reduce dependence on external influences to ensure stable energy supply.

Additionally, the statement criticised Russia’s “unprecedented subversive activities and hybrid attacks” against Moldova, particularly during last year’s presidential election and referendum. These actions, the leaders noted, are part of a systematic effort to destabilise the region and threaten European stability.
