The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has supported the creation of a Special Tribunal for crimes of Russian aggression against Ukraine.

The decision was made on Wednesday in Luxembourg during the Committee's annual meeting, Interfax-Ukraine reports, citing a statement from the Council of Europe.

‘The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe today reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to Ukraine on its path to justice and reconstruction by launching the process of establishing a special tribunal for the crime of aggression,’ the statement said.

The Council of Europe ministers instructed Secretary General Alain Berset to lead the process of establishing a special tribunal for the crime of aggression within the Council of Europe by concluding an agreement with Ukraine.

"The ministers welcomed the ongoing efforts to reach an agreement on the establishment of a Claims Commission for Ukraine, possibly under the auspices of the Council of Europe, and reaffirmed their determination to ensure the return of Ukrainian children illegally deported or forcibly displaced by Russia. They also stressed the importance of strengthening support for Ukraine, in particular through the Action Plan ‘Resilience, Recovery and Reconstruction 2023-2026’, which allows the Ukrainian authorities to move further along the path to accession to the European Union," the statement said.
