In Greece, an F-4 Phantom fighter jet crashed at Tanagra air base during a display involving the air force.
The aircraft came down in a field just a few minutes after the show began, landing near a neighbouring factory. This sparked a fire that engulfed the industrial site and spread into woodland, Kathimerini reports.
The fate of the two pilots remains unknown. It is currently being established whether they managed to eject. Because of the large-scale blaze, the authorities activated the 112 alert system and urged residents to follow the instructions of the emergency services. Nearly 90 firefighters were deployed to tackle the flames.
People say that before the crash the aircraft flew over their homes, after which an explosion was heard; walls shook, the power went out and thick black smoke rose. Witnesses say the fire quickly spread towards populated areas and came close to residential buildings.
