In Kyiv, police have uncovered a scheme to embezzle budget funds during roadworks.

As reported on the capital police department’s website, officials from the road maintenance directorate responsible for the repair and upkeep of roads and structures in the Solomianskyi and Desnianskyi districts arranged for companies to take part in road-repair tenders with artificially inflated costs. The tender was won by a company whose director was involved in the criminal scheme.

Subsequently, the municipal officials signed contracts with him, and he carried out the repairs using substandard materials and received an inflated payment for it. In addition, in the reporting documents the suspects listed special machinery that was in fact not used at all. Expert examinations confirmed that, as a result of these actions, around UAH 4.2 million was unjustifiably spent from the budget.

Law enforcement officers have served the suspects with notices of suspicion for entering false information into official documents, as well as for misappropriating another person’s property by abusing their official position on an especially large scale under martial law.

The suspects face up to 12 years’ imprisonment, with confiscation of property and a ban on holding certain positions for up to three years.
