Interagency Group Sets Tasks for Developing a National Schengen Strategy

Further steps towards establishing a National Schengen Governance System have been set out in Ukraine, the State Border Guard Service reported.

On 26 October, a meeting of the Interagency Working Group on Schengen took place with the participation of Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine, Vsevolod Chentsov.

Participants analysed how national legislation aligns with the Schengen acquis and approved a screening report identifying the current situation, gaps and the measures required.

Tasks for developing a national Schengen strategy were also defined. It will serve as the foundation for implementing Schengen standards, strengthening the institutional capacity of state bodies and building an effective National Schengen Governance System.

“Approval of the report and the tasks for developing the National Schengen Strategy mark the shift from analysing legislation to strategic planning of measures for future Schengen evaluation and Ukraine’s integration into the Schengen area,” the border guards noted.

  • Waiting times in queues at the border with Poland have doubled in recent months. This is linked to the blockade of Ukraine’s seaports and Russian attacks on infrastructure.
