Scoop of the day: Ukraine reports over 10,000 Covid-19 cases

Coronavirus

As of the morning of 10 November, Ukraine has registered 10,179 new Covid-19 cases, most of them in Kyiv (747), Zhytomyr Region (646), Kyiv Region (628), Odesa Region (608) and Zaporizhzhya Region (588). Some 5,514 patients have recovered and 191 died over 24 hours.

Former First Lady Maryna Poroshenko's mother Lyudmyla Perevedentseva died of coronavirus today, ex-President Petro Poroshenko has said on Facebook.

Earlier, Poroshenko wished Zelenskyy speedy recovery from coronavirus.

Kharkiv businessman Pavlo Fuks has published a photo of mayor Hennadiy Kernes, who is undergoing coronavirus treatment in Berlin and has not been seen or heard of since September. On the photo Kernes is seen in a hospital bed close to his step-son Rodion Haysynskyy.

Kyiv pulmonologist Svitlana Huk has told Ukrinform that several strains of coronavirus are circulating in Ukraine, therefore repeat infection can be both severe and mild. She added that she had contracted Covid-19 twice with a four-month break in between the cases.

Foreign policy

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is now in self-isolation due to coronavirus, has held a phone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. He tweeted that it was important to continue Normandy Four negotiations on Donbas and wished the German people success in overcoming Covid-19.

Ukraine is introducing sanctions against Nicaragua over its opening an honorary consulate in Russia-occupied Crimea. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has said that by issuing a patent to the so-called "honorary consul of Nicaragua in Russia" Moscow has violated Ukraine's and international law.

The National Police of Ukraine have closed a criminal case against Joe Biden, which was opened on the motion of ex-Prosecutor-General Viktor Shokin, Ukrinform has reported. Shokin alleged that he had had to step down under pressure from Biden. The case was allegedly closed on 23 September 2020.

Donbas

Due to the demarche by Russian representatives at a meeting of the humanitarian subgroup, the trilateral contact group on Donbas failed to discuss an exchange of prisoners and search for missing persons, the Ukrainian delegation has said on Telegram.

The Ukrainian delegation also said that the trilateral contact group took the action plan for Donbas developed by Ukraine as a basis. However, it is too early to talk about any success, it added.

Minister for the Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories Oleksiy Reznikov has called on the EU to join efforts to ensure Red Cross access to all Ukrainian prisoners.

Poll

Were a parliamentary election be held this weekend, the pro-presidential Servant of the People would score most votes (19% of respondents or 28% of those who would go to the polls), a poll by the Razumkov Centre has found. Crime

Police in Chudniv, Zhytomyr Region are investigating the death of a 28-year-old army lieutenant from Kherson Region who, according to preliminary information, committed a suicide. His body with a chest gunwound was found in a recreation room.
