Scoop of the day: Ukraine sends evacuation plane to Afghanistan

Ukraine has sent the second plane to Afghanistan as part of evacuation efforts in addition to the one already parked in Kabul airport, Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleh Nikolenko has told RBC-Ukraine. The Ukrainian Air Force's Il-76MD had to land in Oman as no safe corridor to Kabul airport or flight permit is guaranteed. Since the situation in the airport is partly un controlled, both planes will need to wait for safety guarantees for flight, boarding and takeoff.

Coronavirus

Thirty-three campers from the Young Guard children's recreation centre, who have tested positive for Covid-19, are preliminarily believed to have contracted the Delta strain, subject to confirmation by a Kyiv lab, local chief sanitary doctor Vitaliy Honcharov has said, according to Suspilne. A total of 50 campers and three staff members have been diagnosed with Covid-19.

Coat of arms

Parliament will hold an extraordinary session at 2.20 p.m. on 24 August, Ukraine's Independence Day, to discuss the bill on the country's big coat of arms. MP Yaroslav Yurchyshyn suggested yesterday that the bill would not be able to score enough votes, which may be used as a reason to dissolve parliament.

Separatists

The former "minister of income and levies" of the separatist self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, Oleksandr Tymofeyev (aka Sasha Tashkent), has been arrested for attempted gross embezzlement in Russia, the Kommersant daily has said. He was close to late DPR leader Oleksandr Zakharchenko and narrowly escaped death when his boss got killed by an explosion. After Denys Pushylin came to power in the DPR, Tymofeyev fled to Russia.
