Scoop of the day: Ukraine sends barbed wire to help Lithuania

Ukraine has sent the first batch of 38 tonnes of barbed wire to help Lithuania to deal with the flow of illegal migrants from Belarus, the State Emergencies Service has said.

Donbas

One Ukrainian serviceman was wounded amid two shooting attacks by Russia-backed militants in Donbas on 12 August, the Joint Forces Operation HQ has said. Ukrainian troops returned fire.

A civilian was killed and a serviceman wounded amid eight ceasefire violations on 11 August.

On 13 August, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) will begin large-scale multi-stage scheduled exercises on counteraction to sabotage and terrorism in Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Exercises will be held in conditions closely resembling the reality and with the use of firearms and armoured vehicles.

Military

The Kharkiv-based Malyshev Plant has manufactured a new tank, Oplot-2M, on the order of the state company Ukrspetseksport. The tank will shortly delivered to Kyiv and will take part in a military parade on Independence Day, 24 August.

Russia's large-scale military exercises which kicked off on 9 August, including in Crimea, pose a threat of a new incursion in mainland Ukraine as well as jeopardize Crimean residents' safety, Crimean Tatar Majlis leader Refat Chubarov has said.

Afghanistan

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has said it insists that Ukrainian nationals should leave Afghanistan immediately until the situation in this war-ridden country stabilizes.
