Scoop of the day: Ukraine reports losses in Donbas

Donbas

Senior Sergeant Vyacheslav Pitko was killed in Donbas on 24 August, the East Operational Command has said.

According to an earlier report, Ukrainian serviceman Oleksandr Aksyonov from Boryspil was killed in the area of responsibility of the East Command on 24 August, the town's mayor Volodymyr Borysenko has said.

Exclusive: Ukraine is deeply concerned about the humanitarian, ecological and economic situation in the occupied territories of Donbas, presidential chief of staff Andriy Yermak has said in an article for LB.ua.

"Repression, detentions, torture – all of these must be stopped. Research and intelligence data attest to an economic decline and full dilapidation of farmland. By flooding dozens of mines, the occupiers endangered the sources of drinking water for around 800,000 people. Caving in carries a potential threat of a man-made disaster," he said.

UK

Wendy Morton, the FCDO Minister for the European Neighbourhood, announced the new Partnership Fund for a Resilient Ukraine on 24 August, the British Embassy in Kyiv has reported. The UK, together with Canada, Sweden, Switzerland and the US, will support Ukraine to mitigate Russia’s destabilising influence in its southern and eastern regions.

The Fund will start its work by December 2021 and aims to gather up to £35 million between the co-donors over three years.

It will finance a range of initiatives to increase the resilience of oblasts affected by conflict, such as technical advice to government and grant investments that create economic opportunities and improve people’s access to public services in southern and eastern Ukraine.

Afghanistan

There are around 90 Ukrainian nationals remaining in Afghanistan, the Foreign Ministry has said. Ukrainian diplomats are working out the ways of their possible evacuation.

USA

Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko told Interfax-Ukraine that in July he asked the United States to consider resuming the practice of providing credit guarantees to Ukraine.

"There was a meeting at the US Treasury. We discussed the question of a new guarantee, extension of the previous one, and other options for possible US assistance to Ukraine. The US government is considering providing a guarantee to Ukraine in this format. Ukraine is a priority if such a decision is made. Trump's administration did not practice this while the current one is still formulating a position on the matter," Marchenko said.
