Ukrainian intelligence service has warned of a widespread "deepfake" depicting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Russia plans to utilize “deepfake” technology - a method of synthesizing the image of a person, based on artificial intelligence - using the face of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to spread misinformation about the surrender of state interests. This was stated by the Main Department of Defense Intelligence Service for Ukraine.

In practice, this means that computer algorithms have been trained to "animate" photos, synthesize the human voice, and replace faces on a particular video. The result is content that looks almost no different from the real thing.

When the conflict with Russia began to gain momentum in early February 2022, Russia intensified all available tools of hybrid war, informational influence in particular, starting to fabricate videos one after another. They were very "cheap" in quality: for instance showing that the kindergarten was allegedly fired upon Luhansk by the Armed Forces of Ukraine [it was not], or that the Armed Forces of Ukraine were preparing a chemical sabotage on some Districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions [they were not], or when the so-called Luhansk People's Republic and Donets People's Republic start mass evacuation of the population, "- stated by the Defense Intelligence Service.

Defense Intelligence Service notes that Russia can use such technology once it considers Ukraine exhausted and ready to surrender.

"But, firstly, this will never happen, and secondly, Intelligence Service Directorate has reconnaissance stating that the face of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky can be used in such a video. Be aware: such a video will be a fake, the purpose of which is to spread the panic, generate disorientation, despair, persuade our troops to surrender," stated by the Defense Intelligence Service.
