Representatives of the U.S. Treasury Department said that at the G7 meeting they plan to offer European countries to introduce tariffs on russian oil as the fastest alternative to a direct oil embargo.

About it reports "Voice of America".

It is noted that officials of the European Union are considering the possibility of introducing a phased embargo on the import of russian oil as a response to russia's war in Ukraine, but the fears of some Eastern European countries about the possible abolition of supply are a serious obstacle to the implementation of this plan.

The tariff mechanism, which will be proposed by the United States, will save russian oil on the market but will limit the amount of income that may come to moscow from exports.

Since russian oil is sold at a discount compared to world prices, the tariff can be set at a level that will allow both to cover part of this gap and reduce russia's profit. But it should be low enough for the russian federation to make a profit that exceeds its production costs, which will give it an incentive to continue exporting.

If russian oil remains on the market, this will avoid possible further jumps in oil prices due to the European embargo, which can compensate for the impact of the embargo on russian incomes.

Funds from tariffs can be sent to the Recovery and Reconstruction Fund of Ukraine.

Earlier, the EU Foreign Minister has not yet been able to approve the sixth package of sanctions against russia. The Head of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Peter Ciarto, told how much money his country will need if an embargo on russian oil is adopted. Then it was about the amount of up to 750 million euros.
