Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps [IRGC] seizes two Greek oil tankers in the Persian Gulf, stated in the statement of KVIR, Radio Svoboda reports citing the press office of IRGC .

The ships were seized a day after Athens helped the United States arrest an Iranian oil tanker for possible sanctions violations.

The ships were allegedly seized "due to unspecified violations", according to the Tasnim news agency.

The US Navy is investigating information about the seized ships after Tehran threatened to take "punitive measures" against Athens over the seizure of an Iranian tanker.

The Greek Foreign Ministry summoned the Iranian ambassador and protested. The ministry said Iranian helicopters had landed special forces on two tankers. One of them, the Delta Poseidon, was sailing in international waters at the time, and the other, the Prudent Warrior, was off the coast of Iran when it was captured.

"These actions are practically piracy," the Greek Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Greece demanded the immediate release of the crew and allowing the ships to continue to move.

May 26, Greek sources reported that at the request of the United States, Iranian oil stored on a ship near the Greek island of Euboea in the Aegean Sea was confiscated.

The ship was temporarily detained by Greek authorities on April 15, when it anchored near the port of Caristos on the island of Evia. At that time, he was flying the russian flag and consisted of 19 russian crew members.

The Greek Coast Guard said he had been arrested on suspicion of violating EU sanctions against russia over the war in Ukraine.

It is unknown whether the seizure was due to Iranian oil, which was subject to US sanctions, or whether the actions were caused by sanctions against a tanker that recently changed its name from Pegas to Lana and has been flying the Iranian flag since May 1.
