President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed Vasyl Malyuk as acting chief of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).

Vasyl Vasylyovych Malyuk is a brigadie general and has been first deputy head of the SBU since March 2022. Before that, he had been deputy interior minister since 16 February and before that, from March 2020 to July 2021, he was head of the Security Service of Ukraine's directorate for combating corruption and organised crime.

Malyuk is a native of Korostyshev. In 2005, he graduated from the National Academy of the Security Service of Ukraine, majoring in Law.

In 2001, he began his military service in security services. He worked at regional directorates of the SBU, from an operative to deputy head of the directorate - head of the department for combating corruption and organised crime.

In January 2020, he moved to the central office of the SBU.

He was awarded the presidential distinction "For participation in the antiterrorist operation".

Last night the president suspended Prosecutor-General Iryna Venediktova and SBU chief Ivan Bakanov.
