US President Joe Biden said at a joint briefing with the President of Ukraine that he came to Kyiv to reiterate that the United States unwaveringly supports Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
"It is important that the US president is in Ukraine on the days when the war began. President Zelenskyy remembers that a year ago I warned the world that Putin would attack, and he did," Biden said.
According to him, it was critical to demonstrate that there is no doubt that the United States will support Ukraine in this war when Russia brutally attacks it.
“For all the disagreement we have in our Congress on some issues, there is significant agreement on support for Ukraine. It’s not just about freedom in Ukraine. … It’s about freedom of democracy at large,” Biden emphasized.
The US President added that he had come to Kyiv to reiterate that the United States unwaveringly supports Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Today, he said, they would discuss how the United States and other allies can better support Ukraine.
"On that dark night a year ago, the world was literally preparing for the fall of Kyiv. It seems like it was much longer ago than just a year. But remember that year, (everyone thought it was - ed.) the end of Ukraine. You know, One year later, Kyiv stands. And Ukraine stands. Democracy stands. Americans stand with you, and the world stands with you. Kyiv has captured a part of my heart, I have to say. I have been here six times as vice president, once as president," the US president said.
He added that on 24 February, during a nighttime conversation with Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian president told him: "You can hear the explosions".
"I will not forget this," Biden emphasized.
The US President noted that Putin's conquest war is failing.
“Putin thought Ukraine was weak and the West was divided. He thought he could outlast us. I don’t think he’s thinking that right now,” he added.
