The Swedish government will transfer eight Archer self-propelled artillery systems to Ukraine, Dagens Industri has reported.
"They will give Ukrainians the opportunity to knock out Russian artillery systems," said Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson.
However, it will take several months before Ukraine starts using these self-propelled guns. During this time, fire control computer systems will be installed, Ukrainian soldiers will be trained, and a logistics hub will be set up near Ukraine for maintenance and repair. Sweden and the United Kingdom are now aiming to cooperate on this hub.
Ukraine is likely to be able to use six of the eight units on the battlefield at the same time. Two will need to be kept in reserve to be able to take spare parts, for example.
In total, Sweden has 48 Archers, 24 of which are used in the Swedish army, 14 will be sold to the UK, and two will be used for further development.
