Oleksiy Chernyshov, Chairman of the Board of Naftogaz of Ukraine, has expressed support for strengthening the role of supervisory boards in the activities of state-owned enterprises and expects a law to be passed to regulate this, company's press service reports.

"This year, we expect a bill (No. 5593-d of 6 July, 2021) to strengthen the role of supervisory boards in the life of state-owned enterprises. This includes the adoption of financial plans and the appointment of board chairmen. This is necessary to depoliticise this system," Oleksiy Chernyshov said during a speech at the Kyiv International Economic Forum on Thursday.

He noted that Naftogaz has already made a decision at the level of the Supervisory Board to appoint and elect the Chairman of the Board exclusively by it.

"It is the supervisory boards that should make these decisions. That is why we invited them to develop our companies," the Naftogaz CEO emphasised.

He expressed his belief that the state should be there only where it is needed, and that it is an inefficient manager, according to him, is known to everyone, not only in Ukraine.

"We have to make sure that state-owned enterprises develop. For this purpose, there is a corporate governance issue," said Chernyshov.

He said that Ukraine does not have time to wait for the end of the war to implement reforms, including in the energy sector.

"We have to do it now, and then we will have a chance to ensure a gradual but steady growth of our GDP and economy," said the Naftogaz CEO.
