Ukraine's power grid is facing a shortage due to the cold snap. This was reported by the press service of Ukrenergo.

"The power system is in a difficult situation. Consumption due to the cold snap exceeds the forecast by 2.7%. This is equivalent to the operation of 2 additional units of thermal power plants. But the power plants currently have no spare capacity. Some units of thermal power plants are undergoing repairs, and solar power plants cannot operate at their maximum capacity due to dense cloud cover across the country," the statement said.

Today the temperature is below the forecast. "Ukrenergo's dispatch centre has seen that consumption has significantly exceeded the forecast level since the morning. "To avoid a shortage and maintain a balance between production and consumption in the power system, it is now especially important to conserve electricity.

In order to avoid outages and maintain the balance in the power system, Ukrenergo's Dispatch Centre has to engage emergency assistance from the transmission system operators of Slovakia, Romania and Poland from 11:00 to 19:00 with a capacity of 700 MW. Emergency assistance is an emergency measure to balance the power system.

At the same time, no consumption limits were introduced, no outage schedules were introduced and no outages are planned.

  • In early November, the President of Ukraine enacted a decision of the National Security and Defence Council to strengthen the resilience of the energy system and prepare the economy for winter.
  • In October, the head of Ukrenergo announced that Ukraine's energy infrastructure would have three levels of protection against Russian attacks. The company's CEO predicts that all levels of protection will be completed in November: "we should be ready before the cold weather".
