The Polish Parliament has recognised the deportation of Crimean Tatars in 1944 as genocide, the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy reports.
"The Polish Parliament has recognised the deportation of Crimean Tatars in 1944 as genocide. This is an extremely important decision!" said Mykola Knyazhytskyy, chairman of the Subcommittee on Culture.
414 out of 460 MPs voted in favour.
"In 2015, it was a great honour for me to initiate such a declaration in the Ukrainian Parliament. And the fact that the whole world supports this idea is incredible. The Baltic States have already joined the recognition of this horrific crime. A month ago, PACE called for the 1944 deportation to be recognised as an act of genocide against the Crimean Tatar people. And today, the Polish Sejm has adopted an important resolution in this regard," - Knyazhytskyy said.
He also congratulated his fellow Crimean Tatars, Akhtem Chiygoz and Refat Chubarov, on the adoption of this resolution.
