On Friday, 19 July, an attempt was made on the life of a well-known linguist Iryna Farion on Masaryk Street in Lviv.

Update 23.30. The press service of the First Medical Association of Lviv reported that Iryna Farion had died, Zaxid.net reports.

Before that, the head of the anaesthesia service, Nataliya Matolinets, said that the victim underwent primary surgical treatment of her head wound and was in critical condition.

The authorities of Lviv and the region expressed condolences over the death of the public figure.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted to the attempt on Iryna Farion's life

‘All the necessary forces of the National Police of Ukraine and the Security Service of Ukraine are involved to establish the circumstances of this crime... Obviously, any violence deserves only condemnation and everyone who is guilty of this attack must be held fully accountable,’ he said.

The Head of State added that the Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko and the Head of the Security Service of Ukraine Vasyl Malyuk promptly reported on the search for the attacker of Iryna Farion.

Update 00.50. In turn, the Ministry of Internal Affairs noted: the attack on Iryna Farion is classified as premeditated murder, the attacker faces up to 15 years in prison.

Police and other necessary services are working at the scene of the incident. Law enforcers have witness statements and are processing data from CCTV cameras. 

‘The crime is in the active phase. I regularly receive reports from the police leadership on the measures taken and the circumstances established. If you have any information about the circumstances of this crime, please inform the police. This data must be properly recorded and thoroughly checked,’ the Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a statement.

According to the publication, citing its own sources, Iryna Farion was admitted at 19:40 to the First Medical Unit of Lviv on Mykolaychuk Street with a gunshot wound to the head in critical condition.

At the time of admission, her condition was extremely serious. The victim is receiving emergency treatment.

The Lviv regional police reported that law enforcement officers had identified the wounded woman, a 60-year-old Lviv resident, and confirmed that she was hospitalised with a gunshot wound to the head.

"A special police operation is being conducted in Lviv and in the region, involving officers from all police services and units of the Lviv Region," the statement said.
